In 2000, a public campaign began to establish My Sister’s House as Sacramento’s first agency to address battering in the Asian and Pacific Islander community. The first 6-bed safe haven in Sacramento was opened in 2003. In 2006, the “No Excuse For Abuse” project was launched, which involved printing information about My Sister’s House on shopping bags in Chinese, Hmong, Tagalog, and Vietnamese, and distributed to various Asian grocery stores in the Sacramento area. The mission of My Sister’s House is “To serve Asian and Pacific Islander and other under-served women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking by providing a culturally appropriate and responsive safe haven, job training, and community services.”
