“In 1976, community activists organized a conference at the New Haven YWCA to discuss the plight of battered women and to create a safety net for them. The result was the New Haven Project for Battered Women, formed in 1977 by volunteers who hid women and children in their homes, ran support groups, and staffed a hotline. Domestic Violence Services offers a wide range of crisis and other services for victims of domestic violence and their children. All services are free and available to individuals and their children in the Greater New Haven and surrounding communities who have had their lives disrupted by domestic violence.”
