CHALLENGE #26 - 2016

CHILDREN’S INN - Sious Falls, SD

*****CHALLENGE COMPLETED*****

This is our first shelter in South Dakota and hopefully not the last.

Domestic violence shelters are expensive to operate as you can imagine. Expenses from the usual operating costs are increased by the need for safety for everyone....not just the women and children in shelter. but the staff and volunteers as well. All shelters will have one or more layers of security to keep everyone safe and secure.

Shelters receive funding from state and local sources. In addition to that, many large corporations make grants also. Among them are the United Way, Mary Kay, Microsoft and many others. Through their generosity, shelters such as Children's Inn are able to provide services to help those who may no longer have a home due to domestic violence.

For Children's Inn, we will need:

25 women - DONE

8 preteen girls - DONE
8 preteen boys - DONE
8 youth girls - DONE

CHALLENGE #25 - 2016

SAFEHOUSE CENTER
Ann Arbor, MICHIGAN

**** CHALLENGE COMPLETED ****
“Stop the cycle and make our communities safer.
At SafeHouse Center, we’re thrilled to join the Start by Believing Campaign this year. Start by Believing is an international campaign organized by End Violence Against Women International, and for the first time a Washtenaw County coalition has been formed to develop a county-wide campaign.

Start By Believing, is a nation-wide public awareness campaign uniquely focused on the public response to sexual assault. Once a survivor reports an assault, each individual’s personal reaction is the first step in a long path towards justice and healing. Knowing how to respond is critical– a negative response can worsen the trauma and foster and environment where perpetrators face zero consequence for their crimes.
The goal is to change outcomes for victims, one response at a time.”

For SafeHouse Center we will need:

CHALLENGE #24 - 2016

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM OF CROSSROADS

After a 3-year affiliation between Crossroads Rhode Island and the Women's Center of Rhode Island, the two organizations merged in July, 2016, to become the Domestic Violence Program of Crossroads. The Domestic Violence Program is primarily an emergency shelter program with a focus on safety and housing. The shelter provides safety for DV survivors and their children in a confidential location separate from other Crossroads properties.

CHALLENGE #23 - 2016

BOLTON REFUGE HOUSE
Eau Claire, Wisconsin

****CHALLENGE COMPLETED****

Back in 1976, a group of women came up with an idea for a Women's Community Center.  However, before they had opened their doors, the local police department contacted them and asked if they would provide shelter to a woman and her children who were fleeing a DV situation.   As a result of that call, the Center was officially opened as "Refuge House".   After moving to several different locations, they moved in 1987 to a more spacious location. On October 6, 1992, Robert Bolton, an Eau Claire police officer, was responding to a domestic abuse call at the shelter.   Officer Bolton attempted to stop the suspect, who was getting into his car.  However, the man was able to retrieve a firearm from his car and fatally shot Officer Bolton.  Later that year, the shelter was renamed " Bolton Refuge House, Inc." in his honor.

FOR THIS SHELTER, WE ARE REQUESTING THE FOLLOWING:

  60  Women's  -  DONE
  10  Men's/Teen Boys  -  DONE
