COZIES FOR PETS & HAPPY HANDS CHALLENGE

TUNDRA WOMEN'S COALITION - Bethel, Alaska

****CHALLENGE COMPLETED****

The last time we “visited” the Tundra shelter, we sent them supplies for the residents who knew how to crochet or knit or wanted to learn.  We also sent them pet cozies/pads for their on-site pet shelter for residents’ pets. They loved them and would love to have them again this time.

Here is what we would like to have pledged:

15 skeins of yarn (worsted weight, acrylic) - DONE
15 pr. of children's scissors - DONE
10 pr. knitting needles (sizes 8 to 10, shorter length) - DONE
15 crochet hooks (sizes G, H, I, or J) - DONE
15 large eye yarn needles (plastic or metal) - DONE

 4 - 20”x20” blankets/pads - DONE
 4 - 24”x24” blankets/pads - DONE
 4 - 24”x30” or 30”x30” blankets/pads - DONE

Pet blankets/pads may be crocheted, knitted, or sewn. If crochet or knit, blanket yarn or several strands of worsted weight held together makes a nice thick pad. If sewn, flannel, corduroy, fleece or denim are good materials - with a layer of batting in between - with a line or two of stitching through the middle to hold batting in place. Even an old clean blanket can be cut up and used for batting. ALL ITEMS MUST BE WASHABLE!

MAILING DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 18, 2017

MAIL TO:    C. J. PLEASANT

    P. O. BOX 2029
    BETHEL, ALASKA 99559

Pledges may be placed in a comment below or emailed (preferred) to:   thepinkslipperproject@gmail.com.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.   This challenge is running on our Facebook page, also.

A big THANK YOU to all of you wonderful ladies for making pledges and adding to your initial pledges so that we could complete this challenge in less than 24 hours! We have such a terrific group.

We are also going to do a combined Happy Hands and Cozies for Pets challenge for Tundra Women's Coalition. We have many new members since our last Cozies or Happy Hands challenge for a shelter who may not be familiar with them.

Basically, if a shelter has a program in place to teach crocheting or knitting or have residents who already know how, we like to send them supplies to help them out. We all know how much our crafts/hobbies help us to relax and make us feel better and we want to "pass it forward". Also, many shelters now have a shelter or program in place to allow residents to bring their pets with them. Many women will not leave an abusive situation if they have to leave pets home to possibly suffer abuse when they leave. Pets like nice cozy blankets/pads to lay on and cuddle with, too, to help ease their anxiety.

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask us. We will be putting up the Cozies/HH challenge shortly. We hope you join in. Even a pledge for one skein of yarn or one pet mat is great!

CHALLENGE #3 - 2017

TUNDRA WOMEN'S COALITION
Bethel, Alaska

*****CHALLENGE COMPLETED*****

All shelters offer valuable programs for the residents of the shelter and also provide programs for their communities.  One valuable such program at Tundra Women's Coalition is TAAV - Teens Acting Against Violence.  This program is for teens, age 12-18, living in Bethel. T he group's focus is on peer education and outreach.   TAAV members speak out to engage peers about issues such as domestic violence, teen dating violence, sexual assault, types of abuse, suicide, substance abuse, etc., through discussion, activities and the experiences and wisdom of other members.  They share their knowledge with peers and communities throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.  They travel to village classrooms, perform skits at conferences and events, record PSAs for radio, etc.  Many participants of TAAV feel that the program helps them make sense of their experiences and provides support for living a sober, nonviolent life.  Many of the members of TAAV now work for the Tundra Women's Coalition and one has become a member of the Board of Directors of the shelter.

Let's send the following number of slippers and washcloths to Alaska ~~~~

(Note: We were told previously that women’s large-size slippers were a needed size at the shelter, so we added an additional 5 women’s - large - to be sure there are enough of that particular size.)
