THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD, INC.
Saginaw, Michigan
June 20, 2014
We are all familiar with the underground railroad from our history books as a path to safety and that is why the Underground Railroad shelter was so named. FAMILY SHELTER SERVICE - Wheaton, Illinois
Thursday, March 13, 2014
FSS has provided services for domestic violence for over 35 years. On their website I found something I've never noticed before on shelter websites, a virtual trip through their shelter. So as we take a journey from state to state, today I took a journey through a bright and cheerful shelter. Most of the walls were a pretty yellow, the furniture was what you'd find in our homes, warm, cozy and comfortable. The kitchen was large
and modern. The playroom for the children was full of toys. There were computers, a laundry room and large bedrooms. FSS has 29 beds and they have requested that they receive only 30 pair of slippers. Please send exactly what you pledge. I told them to contact us when they wanted more and they said they would.
For Family Shelter Service we needed the following in gender neutral colors:

ADVOCATES FOR VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE
Valdez, Alaska
February 18, 2014
Advocates for Victims of Violence in Valdez, Alaska, serves the Prince William Sound and Copper Basin areas including 18 communities. In the email I received, they wrote:
“We provide services for women and their children experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault in their lives. I think in Alaska these slippers around the shelter will be a BIG hit!! Most come here with just the clothes on their backs and right now we are trying to get funding to replace the heat system here in the shelter, so it gets chilly in the winter here. So, anything you can donate we will definitely appreciate! Thank you so much for reaching out to us and contacting us. I never heard of this program and what a GREAT idea!! I love the website too. “

ICEBOX OF THE NATION CHALLENGE
International Falls, MN
February 10, 2014
Friends Against Abuse is a non-profit community based advocacy agency that works with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and general crime and their families.
"We do not have a shelter in town – but we have contracts with two hotels to provide safe housing to victims that are escaping domestic violent situations. We have groups that make and/or donate quilts, pajamas, books and personal hygiene products. When we saw your Pink Slipper Project – it touched our hearts and knew it would do the same to the clients we work with. We are a small, isolated, rural northern county that proudly holds the name of “Icebox of the Nation”. Our county spends almost one million dollars a year on domestic violence. Last year we had 680 clients with 5,378 ongoing contacts. This has been a difficult winter so far – making the slipper project look even more appealing.
We are interested in receiving slippers to get to our clients. Please let me know what is needed to become recipients of your project. Thank you for what you do – you are making a difference. Sincerely, LeeAnn Meer, Executive Director
For Friends Against Violence we needed:

I won't be separating boys and girls this time -
so please, if at all possible, use neutral colors. We needed 15 sets of slippers and 40 washcloths for this challenge.
